Puppy Training Pads

Puppy training pads are a great way to reduce accidents as well as reduce clean up when there is one. While consistent monitoring and training of your puppy is important it also helps to make it easy for him to succeed. We can do this several ways. Monitoring his food and water intake, for example, schedules approximately when he has to go so we can watch for signs he needs out.

•    For those who miss the signs a puppy training pad placed by the back door gives him a place to go where he has the idea of going to the back door but when it’s not open and he can’t get your attention he doesn’t soil the floor.
•    Praise him for using the pad, but of course you want to encourage the ultimate praise in going outside.
•    Ideally these pads will be used not in a crate but outside the crate to draw the puppy to another area. Because of odors we cannot smell using them in a crate can make cleanup faster but many are prone to shredding them and it draws them to potty in their crate. This is not the message you want to encourage!
•    By having a pad at the back door this gives puppies a place to go rather than anywhere in the home. For those with small older dogs litter boxes or puppy training pads give them a place to go without getting “in trouble” when you’re gone during the day.
•    Another good time to use the puppy training pads is if your housebroken dog will be left home alone longer than you normally do, giving the option of the ‘right’ place to go rather than wherever she happens to be at the time. This prevents damage to carpets and floors as well as the “mines” as you walk through the home in the dark.

Don’t think these have to be just for puppies! Some studies show early spay and other issues can lead to incontinence issues with older females.  Puppy training pads by the back door, again, gives her a place to go without getting in trouble when she knows she should get outside but can’t get there. This eases the stress on her as well as eases the cleanup for you. These can run $45-50 for economy packages of 100, but it is much cheaper than floor replacement and continual cleaning.

For those looking to not add to your trash bill and landfill areas there are also bio-degradable puppy training pads available for about $20 for a pack of 22. Without having petroleum components these have renewable resources of tree products and will break down when composted or in those landfills.

Puppy training pads are easy to use and reasonable in cost. Another possibility for the biodegradable ones especially is changing the place in the yard you want your dog to go. This perhaps can train her to go in a certain corner rather than on the deck or patio. This can reduce cleanup chores as the feces are in one place rather than all over the yard.

It’s also convenient for both pet and owner to have the puppy training pads by the back door. Easier on you, easier on your puppy!
