How do I train my puppy?

I just purchased an 8 week old Basset Hound puppy. He is a little harder to crate train than my other dog was and barks/howls all night long! Is there anything I can do to stop this behavior?

I am not opposed to puppy training classes but I don't know of any reputable trainers. Any help is appreciated!

At that age he can be crated for about 3 hours. (The rule of thumb for how many hours he can stay in his crate is his age in months plus one). I have a 10-month old pit bull. I got him when he was 8 wks old. You have to get up in the night just like he was an infant! He is still a baby. I set my clock in the night to get up at appropriate intervals, to feed him and let him go "use it".

Take a nap in the afternoon, it will help. Don't get discouraged. It really won't be that long before he will sleep five, six, seven, eight hours.

When my pit bull was several months old he developed a BIG booming voice, and he uses it when I put him in his crate at bedtime. So I have one of those sound machines that plays white noise or soothing sounds in the room where the dogs crates are. It masks minor sounds that may wake them, and they don't hear me in the other part of the house either. A whirring fan or radio playing soft music or static would work as well. Sometimes he howls for a few minutes, but soon he settles down and goes to sleep.

  2. As far as barking & howling goes: ignore that unless it is because he has to go the the bathroom. Do not scold him (negative reinforcement), do not take him out of the crate to quiet him (positively reinforcing the bad behavior). Get up and leave the room if he is doing that. He will learn that doing that makes you leave him.

  3. Hey there. Good for you for looking for a class right away – this will help you a lot.

Even if you don't ever ask a question on there, you'll get a lot from the FAQ and Files sections. Good luck!

*hitting the crate won't teach your dog anything except to be afraid of the crate. Punishment – physical punishment, and the bullying techniques used by old-school trainers, will always have unexpected side effects. Think very carefully about the advice that you get. Hitting your dog or intimidating him will cause new problems,*

  4. sad to say, you do have to ignore it. eventually he will get the hint and stop. the other thing you might try, though i don't know how it will work with your guy, is a tip a trainer that we had come to the house gave us. he said when the dog whined or barked in the crate, to give the side of the crate a gentle whack and tell the pup 'quiet' in a firm tone. the whack startels them into being quiet, at which point you give them tons of praise. amazingly, it took my pup 3 times, and he got it. now, at almost 7 months, he very rarely will bark when he's in the crate. good luck !

  5. There is a great show on TV called "the dog whisperer". (Here is the web address: http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/channel/dogwhisperer/?fs=www9.nationalgeographic.com ) The trainer's name is Cesar Millan. He is amazing.
We have two 8 month old puppies. They are sisters we rescued from the local shelter. (we got them when they were 4 months old) Training two at the same time has been challenging but Cesar has helped so much! I have learned about "calm assertive energy" and how with that and being consistent in their training I can do anything.

They are coming along so well! They are house trained, they do not jump on our guests anymore and so many of their other little issues have been taken care of one by one because my roommate and I have learned that we need to be "the pack leaders" as Cesar calls it. It is work but so worth it in the end! Our out of control pups get compliments on their behavior now!

I hope this is helpful and I wish you the best with your new little family member!

  8. Bassets are VERY stubborn, so if you reinforce the howling by paying ANY attention to it, he will continue.
